About
Vijender Singh Beniwal became the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal by securing a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the middleweight division. Vijender's success on the international stage continued with bronze medals at the 2009 World Championships and the 2010 Commonwealth Games, as well as silver medals at the 2006 and 2014 Commonwealth Games.
In June 2015, Vijender transitioned to professional boxing, signing a multi-year agreement with Queensberry Promotions through IOS Sports and Entertainment.
Vijender's boxing journey began at the Bhiwani Boxing Club under the guidance of former national-level boxer Jagdish Singh, who recognized his potential early on. His first major recognition came when he won a state-level bout, followed by a silver medal at his first sub-junior nationals in 1997 and his first gold medal at the 2000 Nationals.
He became the all-India youth boxing champion in 2003, and his breakthrough performance at the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, where he won a silver medal despite being a junior boxer, marked a significant turning point in his career.
Beyond his achievements in boxing, Vijender has also made significant strides in politics. He contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the South Delhi constituency, demonstrating his commitment to serving his country in multiple capacities. His dual career in sports and politics highlights his versatility and dedication, making him a respected figure in both arenas.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Indian sports, Vijender was awarded the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award in July 2009, alongside wrestler Sushil Kumar and boxer Mary Kom. This was a historic moment as it was the first time three sportspeople received the award simultaneously.
